Movies nowadays are in constant competition with each other, and studios are always looking for that next breakout film that will become lightning in a bottle. Animated movies tend to stand a far larger chance of being a breakout success (remember how Frozen just never stopped making dump truck-sized piles of money?), and the studio behind The Emoji Movie was certainly looking for their movie to stand out. Stand out it did — as one of the lowest-rated debuts on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it first released this past weekend, critics despised the film so much that it ended up receiving a crushing 0 percent rating. In other words, put a great big poop emoji right over the poster, because that’s what it is. Even films like The Mummy, Baywatch, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad, some of the worst rated movies in recent past, never got even close to being that low.

Many critics panned the film as being a “witless Inside Out knockoff” that struggled too much to capitalize on Disney’s knack for making engaging stories out of bizarre concepts (Wreck-It Ralph is another such example). Some of the terms to describe it have been “callous cash grab,” “a waste of time, resources, and a bunch of comedians’ voices,” and “Unfunny. Saccharine. Nonsensical. Painful. And, of course, crappy. (If you prefer the poop emoji, that works too).”

The movie’s rating has slightly risen recently to 6 percent, but that doesn’t change the fact that the movie started off at a horrible 0 percent.
