With an overwhelming amount of stories breaking out in Hollywood since the accusations against disgraced executive Harvey Weinstein, one response is being seen as deceptive for a different reason.
Kevin Spacey is now the most recent person to be accused of sexual misconduct, but instead of focusing simply on an apology, Spacey has also used the allegations to publicize that he is now identifying as a gay man. In a statement on the House Of Cards actor’s Twitter profile, he issued a “sincere apology,” but almost immediately after, used the platform to categorize his sexual orientation.
The origin of the experience dates back to 1986, now more than 30 years ago, with prominent Rent and Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp being the victim. Rapp, who was only 14 at the time, was then a part of Broadway, where Spacey was also performing at the age of 26. The two were both at a party that Spacey had invited Rapp to since they were both in the same industry. This is when the event occurred.
Though Rapp had been used to attending such functions as a prominent child actor, he claims to have spent the majority of the night watching TV in a bedroom. When the party had concluded, Rapp was unaware until Spacey came into the doorway of the room and began to make advances on him.
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years,” Spacey’s statement posted on Sunday night read.

“I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy,” he went on. “As those closest to me know, in my life, I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic relationships with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior,” Spacey concluded.
