When Jennifer Aniston purchased her 1965 home in 2011 for $21 million, she described it as being, “the furthest thing from what I wanted.” She approached her longtime friend and famous designer Stephen Shadley to help execute her perfect, dream house vision.
When it comes to what she’s looking for, the actress says, “I’m all about the cozy.” Her life motto is, “Sexy is important, but comfort is essential.” That’s a pretty great mantra to live by!
The decorating and renovation process also included her husband and fellow actor, Justin Theroux. It wasn’t easy at first for Aniston to include a third person into the design process.
She shared that, “Justin definitely wanted to be involved, so there was a bit of a learning curve for me on how to include another voice in the design process. For instance, I figured out that immediately saying ‘No!’ to any suggestion is not the most collaborative move.”
Eventually they were able to find the right balance and create a stunning interior complete with silk rugs, hand-painted wallpaper, and abstract expressionist paintings. The grounds were transformed to include terraces, gardens, and a swimming pool surrounded by a teak deck.
“Every corner you turn, you have an experience. Everywhere you look, you get a vista,” she said. “We worked very hard to get that flow right.”
It turns out the star even enjoyed stepping away from the limelight for a while and taking on the whole project. “If I wasn’t an actress, I’d want to be a designer. I love the process,” she shared. “There’s something about picking out fabrics and finishes that feeds my soul.”
