Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hasn’t even been released in theaters yet, and already we have James Gunn confirming that he will be directing the third film in the series! In a Facebook post released on Monday, the Slither director stated that he’d rather just answer that question now instead of having some random interviewer ask him if he’ll be returning to direct.

“I thought I’d share it with the most important people in the Guardiansverse — you, the fans, who have been so incredibly supportive and enthusiastic over the past five years, it has moved me to tears on a regular basis”, he said.
Gunn has been in love with this franchise ever since he adapted the first film in 2014 from its comic book roots. He explained further in his post how much he has come to fall in love with the characters that inhabit that universe (including the brand new ones that we’ll be able to see pretty soon!) and how he wouldn’t have wanted anybody else touching his beloved trilogy.

He further expressed how much he absolutely cares about the world he has had a hand in creating and how Hollywood has a trend of creating lackluster third acts to sequels (just think of Spider-Man 3, X-Men: The Last Stand, you know, some of those).

“In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.”

James Gunn also stated that the movie will come out following the forth-coming Avengers: Infinity War movies and will help to carry on the Marvel movies for the next ten years. He even assured us that he’ll approach the task with as much integrity as he possibly can.

Let’s hope that he does indeed approach it in a genuinely creative way, especially given that so many directors seem to burn out by the time they get to the third film. This will be the first time that a single director will make all three films of a trilogy in a Marvel series.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available to see in theaters on May 4. Meanwhile, you can find the trailer for the movie below.
