Stephen Lang’s badass-to-the-bone Colonel Quaritch was handedly one of the standout roles in James Cameron’s Avatar, a character who — despite being almost unbearably clichéd — still managed to evoke that sense of terror from his borderline maniacal nature. If you weren’t a fan of his character in the first place, you might not be happy with this news. But if you loved him so, face scars and all, then you’ll be absolutely delighted with this news.
In case you haven’t heard, James Cameron has spent the better part of the last eight years developing the stories for four (yes, four) sequels to his 2009 juggernaut success. As in, there will be five films total once the Pandora dust settles. Fans of the original have responded with, shall we say, mixed emotions, seeing as how many wanted a sequel two or three years after the original, not what will be 11 years once the first sequel releases in 2020.
But we’re getting them. Like it or not, the highest-grossing film director is looking to make a few more billion — if the stories hold up. Cameron finally gave us a slight hint at the direction these sequels will be taking, at least when it comes to the bad guy department.
In an interview with Empire magazine, the acclaimed director revealed that Stephen Lang’s battle-hardened Colonel will not only be returning, but will be the main villain who will run as a thread throughout all of the sequels, tying them together cohesively.
Says Cameron: “The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy….I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”
It’s unclear how his character will return, seeing as how the last time we saw him he had a few arrows sticking out of his chest. Perhaps they’ll find some way to revive his dead body, put his brain inside of a machine, or perhaps just give him his own Na’vi avatar body! In a world where magic trees bring people back to life, they could come up with endless explanations.
This also isn’t the first character that we will know who will be resurrected from the dead, as it’s been confirmed that Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine will also be making her triumphant return from the dead, as well as a couple others who otherwise were deceased at the movie’s end.
